August
16, 1977 will be in my memory forever. The day Elvis died. It was a
Tuesday.
I
was singing at ‘King of the Road’ in Nashville, when the word came down.
Shock.
Nobody
could talk. I couldn’t sing.
That
day, I went into mourning and this song
was
born. After five days of grief, I took it to my publisher. There were 120
tribute songs in the hands of Nashville publishers. So, the song rested in
my file cabinet for 31 years.
To
celebrate the 40th anniversary of Elvis’s debut at the Las Vegas
International Hotel, producer Pat Navarre and I recorded this song for Elvis
fans.
My
heart still aches when I hear his music.
I
loved him beyond words.
